Oil Sampling Instructions
Ideally, oil samples should be taken from an active area of the sump or line returning oil to the sump before any filtration.
The machine has to be operating or within at least 20 minutes of shut down. Particles settle out of the oil when the machine is stationary and the oil analysis results will underestimate the wear.
If a sampling valve or tap is fitted then care has to be taken to make sure any "static oil" is not sampled by running the first oil into waste container before taking the sample.
Avoid getting any dirt in the oil sample by cleaning the area before sampling.
When sampling with a plastic tube down the dip stick tube take care to only introduce only enough tube to reach the oil; going deeper risks sampling the sludge accumulated on the bottom of the sump or worse getting the tubing caught by the gearing. Use a new tube for each sample to avoid cross contamination.
Clearly identify the oil sample with machine details, site date etc.
